I have a busy practice in clinical negligence, personal injury, the Court of Protection, inquests & inquiries, public law, and human rights. I have experience of appearing led in the Court of Appeal and unled in the High Court in several areas of practice.I act in complex clinical negligence and personal injury claims, including those concerning catastrophic injury, of a value of up to several million. My caseload includes cases arising from the infected blood scandal, brain injuries, birth injuries, delayed diagnosis of cancer, delayed treatment of cauda equina syndrome, and fatal accidents. I acted as junior counsel in the test appeal of Bass v Ministry of Defence [2020] EWHC 36 (QB).I accept instructions in all fields of health & welfare and property & finances in the Court of Protection, acting for the Official Solicitor, local authorities, CCGs, and individuals. I regularly appear in applications under sections 16 and 21A of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and have experience of cases concerning deputyship, use of social media, capacity to consent to sexual relations, and serious medical treatment. I was a contributing author to the recent MoJ consultation on revising the Mental Capacity Act 2005 Code of Practice.I act in inquests involving the NHS, the police, and prison services and have particular experience of cases in which Article 2 ECHR is engaged. I advise on civil claims arising from inquests. A number of my cases have been nationally reported.I also advise in a range of public law matters, including judicial review, healthcare, community care, actions against the police, Human Rights Act damages claims, and CICA compensation matters. I recently acted as junior counsel in the Court of Appeal case of R (on the application of AXO, a child, by her litigation friend, JXO) v First-Tier Tribunal (Social Entitlement Chamber) v The CICA [2024] EWCA Civ 226.Please contact my clerk, Joe Kallas (k•••••@oldsquare.co.uk), with any queries or instructions.
