Early in my career in HR, I attended as many training sessions with other HR professionals as possible to sharpen my skills. During one session, I was baffled by the fact that each HR professional with whom I came into contact worked with one goal in mind: to decrease potential liability for the employer. I thought, “Sure, that is a very important focus-–but why do that with little to no care for the employee?” When I raised the question to the group, you could have heard a pin drop. So, what did I do? I made it my mission to be a different kind of HR professional. I have built my career on the foundation of authentic human care, communication, and goal-oriented peer coaching. And what I discovered is that this foundation can do more than coexist with decreasing potential liability for the employer: Leading with integrity, and coaching with real purpose, is actually what creates a high-performing culture.
