ABOUT TROY ALVA
I am a technically grounded, systems-oriented leader working at the intersection of engineering, supply chain strategy, and business execution. In my role as a Staff Strategic Sourcing Manager at Illumina, I am responsible for the Optics and Light Sources (Lasers) categories, where I shape supplier strategy for technically complex components in support of product roadmaps.I partner closely across product development, manufacturing, operations, and adjacent functions to translate technical requirements into resilient, cost-effective supplier strategies. My work extends beyond commercial negotiation to include supplier qualification, capability development, risk management, and alignment of external technologies with product and lifecycle needs.I am most effective when sourcing decisions require deep technical context and strong cross-functional alignment—evaluating advanced optical and laser technologies, qualifying new suppliers, and guiding tradeoffs that balance performance, cost, risk, and scalability.My academic background includes a B.S. in Neuroscience and both an M.S. and Ph.D. in Bioengineering, with research spanning next-generation sequencing and ribosome profiling, mathematical modeling and control systems, and applied biological engineering. Alongside my industry role, I serve as an Adjunct Professor at Palomar College, where I teach R programming and applied data science.
