The Hazardous Waste Management Program (Haz Waste) is a state directed coalition whose mission is to protect and enhance public health and environmental quality in King County by reducing the threat posed by the production, use, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials. As a member of the Policy Team, my role is to promote systematic changes in the production, use, and disposal of hazardous materials to help ensure that chemicals and products are safe for people and the environment. And work to create change through policy and product stewardship initiatives through community engagement. Specifically, my duties include: • Using Haz Wastes Racial Equity Tools to develop an overarching racial equity strategy for all core policy work, so that approaches and criteria are applied consistently in policy planning, selection, and development. • Identify and align sources of demographic data for residents and businesses that will be impacted by proposed policies. • Establish, align, and implement strategies for engaging communities of color, immigrant, refugee, and low-income customers in policy decisions. • Collaborate with stakeholders and community groups to identify, analyze, and align potential new policy issues based on hazardous materials exposures that most directly affect communities of color, immigrant, refugee, and low-income customers. • Establish targeted universalism goals for policy planning and prioritization.
