ABOUT TRISTAN REED
Tristan Reed is an economist in the World Bank’s Development Research Group, focused on questions about private sector development and economic policy. His recent research, published in top economics journals, has studied whether markets are competitive, why some prices are higher in low-income countries, and the long-run returns to private equity in emerging markets. Alongside research, he provides analysis and advisory on economic policy topics to World Bank country teams and their government clients. Starting this year, he will teach a module of the Value Chains for Jobs Impact Academy, which supports governments over multiple years to develop new value chains that create well-paying jobs. He has significant experience working on economic policy in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Tristan is also a trusted adviser of the G20 High Level Independent Panel on Pandemic Preparedness and Response, having written an influential paper proposing new approaches for developing countries to finance purchases of medical countermeasures like vaccines in future emergencies. Prior to joining the World Bank, Tristan was an associate of McKinsey and Company’s Africa office, where he specialized in work for banking and public sector clients. He started his career as a research assistant for various research organizations including the Jameel Poverty Action Lab and the Brookings Institution. A native of California, he holds a PhD in economics from Harvard University and a BA from the University of California, Los Angeles. In his spare time, he is a Board Member of the Sadie Collective, an organization founded to provide rewarding career pathways in economics to students who are demographically underrepresented in the field.
