Machine learning is easy and amazing — until you have to rely on it working 100% of the time. That’s where the real work begins. Experience has shown that the hardest part of ML oftentimes isn’t the model — it’s the system around the model. The real questions begin after deployment: What happens when the model inevitably fails? Can it be detected quickly? Is there a clear response? How will the system adapt and learn?Projects have ranged from wrangling messy data to delivering production-ready systems — always balancing thoughtful experimentation with practical execution. I focus on that uncomfortable, blurry space between research and reality.As an extroverted, warm-blooded South African, I have learnt to love those moments of (awkward) shared silence when working with introverted technical experts.
