As a Nurse Technician in the largest Level IV NICU in the state of Michigan, and one of the top 10 largest contiguous NICUs in the country, I take on several roles to assist the nurses in caring for the neonates admitted to our 108-bed service.Upon admission to the unit, I serve as the Admission Nurses\' right hand. As soon as the neonate is transferred to our isolette, I begin settling the patient, obtaining their vitals, and getting them connected to our monitors for continuous observation of their temperature, oxygen saturation, heart rate, respiration rate, and blood pressure. The Nurse will then attempt to place an IV, during which I will ensure the baby remains calm while passing alcohol wipes, needles, flushes, and gauze pads. Once the IV is placed, I work directly with the Nurse and Neonatal Nurse Practitioner or Neonatologist to obtain the necessary labs to aid in diagnoses. Once the labs are drawn, I secure the IV catheter while the Nurse maintains placement. During the neonates stay in the NICU, I assist the Bedside Nurses during care times, which consist of vital sign recordings, diaper changes, and feedings. Additionally, I obtain EKGs when ordered, pick-up blood products from the blood bank when transfusions are necessary, assist in sterile procedures such as circumcisions and umbilical line placement, and provide hearing screens prior to discharge.
