ABOUT TRENO MORTON

As the Executive Director of New Roots Community Land Trust, I lead initiatives that address systemic injustices and empower African Nova Scotian (ANS) residents in the North End of Halifax. Our mission focuses on reclaiming land, ensuring equitable housing, and building a foundation for sustainable growth and resilience. By protecting the cultural identity of the North End, we foster opportunities for economic empowerment and self-determination. Growing up in a single-parent household in North End Halifax, I witnessed the resilience and strength of my community. These experiences instilled in me a deep sense of responsibility to advocate for meaningful change. This connection fuels my work every day, reminding me that today’s efforts are investments in a more inclusive future. Land ownership is central to our work at New Roots. By managing land through a community land trust model, we ensure rising land values benefit long-time residents rather than displacing them. This approach counters gentrification while fostering stability and autonomy for the ANS community. Youth empowerment is vital to our mission. We believe young people are not just the future, they are the present. Through mentorship programs, leadership opportunities, and youth-centered initiatives, we inspire the next generation to shape their community. From decision-making to public space design, youth voices are integral to our work. Sustainability is another pillar of our vision. A flagship project includes developing a net-zero building to serve as both a community hub and a model for sustainable design. By combining energy efficiency with community-focused spaces, we show how sustainability aligns with cultural preservation and economic resilience. Collaboration drives New Roots. Partnerships with organizations like Rondo Community Land Trust allow us to exchange knowledge and apply global best practices locally. Community engagement drives everything we do, from design workshops to membership drives, ensuring our initiatives reflect the voices of those we serve. Pursuing a Master’s in Urban Planning has deepened my understanding of sustainable development and housing equity. This journey informs the strategies I bring to my work and broadens my perspective on systemic challenges. As a young Black leader, I understand the weight of expectations, but I remain committed to authenticity and purpose. My vision extends beyond the North End. New Roots can become a model for ANS communities across Nova Scotia, empowering future generations to thrive.
