Innovations with optics and photonics As a ZEISS Fellow and head of a small team in Corporate Research and Technology I have the privilege to contribute to innovations in many fields of optics and photonics, for instance lithography optics, digital optics, quantum optics, miniaturized optics, consumer optics, medical optics, and optical metrology. As a physicist I focus on optics and photonics for a reason: They contribute to almost every aspect of our life, and they are indispensable in science and technology. And they are marvelous fields for innovation. So, it’s rather easy to create impact with them. When I moved from the University to ZEISS it was because of my wish for creating impact and out of scientific interest: My scientific work on high resolution polarized imaging was immediately useful for solving some issues of optical lithography. That was much better than writing papers! But to build a lithography lens for the generation after next, we needed an even better understanding. That required scientific research again - and a lot of learning and teaching inside the company. Finally, I love teaching. Teaching forces me to condense a topic to its very essence. Smart people say that if you can’t explain it, you haven’t understood it. And who is better to challenge your understanding than a group of smart students? Of course, teaching takes its time. But it’s definitely worth the effort and I am happy that ZEISS encourages me to continue teaching modern optics at the University of Konstanz. In return, the students do not learn only optics. In addition, they learn about successes and failures, about the dos and don’ts in a high-tech company.
