By the early 1920s, Long Beach had become one of Southern California’s top resort destinations, with tranquil beaches drawing thousands year-round. The city embraced water sports—most notably surfing from Hawaii—which helped launch California’s iconic surf culture. With this recreational boom came a wave of new waterfront hotels, the most notable being The Breakers Hotel, opened in the mid-1920s. Conceived by local banker Fred B. Dunn, the $3 million project (over $52 million today) was designed by famed architects Walker & Eisen. The 15-story Mediterranean-style structure featured a domed cupola, luxurious rooms, a Turkish bath, barbershop, and the grand “Hall of Galleons” dining room.Upon its 1926 debut, The Breakers quickly became the finest hotel in Long Beach, with nightly full occupancy and glowing reviews. Dunn soon sold it to eager investors, but the hotel’s fortunes declined after the 1929 stock market crash and a major earthquake. It struggled through the 1930s—until legendary hotelier Conrad Hilton purchased and revitalized it in 1938. He introduced new features including the stylish Art Deco “Sky Room” lounge.Under Hilton’s ownership, The Breakers experienced a remarkable revival. The Sky Room attracted Hollywood stars like Errol Flynn, Clark Gable, Rita Hayworth, and John Wayne, becoming one of the region’s premier dining spots. Business thrived through WWII and beyond, even after Hilton sold the hotel in the late 1940s. However, decades of changing ownership led to decline. In 2017, local firm Pacific6 acquired the building, aiming to restore its historic grandeur. After years of careful renovation, it is set to reopen in 2024 as the “Fairmont Breakers Long Beach.” Thanks to these efforts, this legendary hotel is poised to shine once more.
