ABOUT TONY HERNANDEZ
I was born in Houston, TX, but I grew up in Mexico. I came back to the U.S. when I was 16 years old. When I enrolled in high school, some of my school credits did not transfer, and I was pushed a year back. I stayed after class for three months in an after-school program, called A+, to recover my credits. Although my peers belittled those who attended A+, I studied incessantly. I took college-entry exams to enroll in Advanced Placement and community college courses to make up for the lost time. My AP Literature teacher saw my potential and became my mentor upon joining the school’s debate team, which helped me improve my public speaking skills. The next year, I graduated with honors and earned a scholarship to attend college. I earned two bachelor’s degrees from the University of Texas at Austin. In college I tutored students on and off campus, mentored incoming freshmen, conducted research, and worked in D.C.
