ABOUT TONIE CHALTAS
Little did I know that a summer job would shape the trajectory of my life. While at Dalhousie University, I joined the first male and female crew on Bluenose II — the tall ship on the Canadian dime. It was an extraordinary experience. I learned the power of tradition and heritage, and equally, the responsibility to challenge the status quo when it no longer serves. Most importantly, it ignited a lifelong commitment to equality. Those lessons have guided every chapter of my leadership journey.Today, I am honoured to serve as CEO of Achev. As a leading charity in our sector, we create faster paths to prosperity for more than clients annually, most of whom are permanent resident newcomers. Our services span employment, settlement, and language services. We also deliver dedicated programming for youth and women, and provide IT solutions and services to sector partners and governments. With 400+ staff across the GTA, we support clients across Canada, and abroad.I began my career in politics at Queen’s Park, translating an understanding of politics and government into a 20+ year consulting career. I opened and grew the Toronto office of a government relations firm, establishing it as a trusted advisor for companies navigating the Ontario public sector. It was there that I discovered a passion for the commercial side of business — strategy, growth, and execution.A move to Hill+Knowlton led to two decades of senior leadership across the Canadian agency. I managed some of the firm’s largest clients, led two national practices, and increasingly focused on the “business of the business.” I served as General Manager for Toronto, Calgary, and Montreal; Chief Integration Officer; and Chief Operating Officer. I also held global responsibility for strategic business planning and led multiple transformation initiatives in Canada and internationally.Throughout my career, I have become an advocate for leading through influence. When people follow not because they report to you, but because they believe in the mission and trust the direction, extraordinary results are possible. I also believe in Kindness as a core value. Kindness is not soft — it is strategic. It builds trust, unlocks performance, and sustains organizations through complexity.Messy and complex? Often.Rewarding? Always. The status quo is not for me.
