imaging #research #collaboration #engagement #innovation #KNEE3DHaving trained in musculoskeletal imaging, I joined the team in Norwich, UK, as a consultant radiologist in 2017, building on their strong foundations of excellence in clinical care, teaching and research.I have specialist experience in complex post-surgical, sarcoma, rheumatological, paediatric, and peripheral nerve imaging as well as general imaging. I perform a wide range of specialist intervention that includes bone and soft tissue biopsy, therapeutic injections, kyphoplasty, vertebroblasty, and ablation.I have a long standing interest in collaborative development of image analysis techniques for application in translational research and clinical assessment of musculoskeletal disease. My current research focus is on 3D imaging in osteoarthritis, in particular weight bearing CT of the knee. I also have experience with osteoporosis and fragility fractures as well as advanced 3D MRI techniques in quantitative osteoarthritis assessment. My PhD involved developing image analysis algorithms and 3D data handling to tackle problems in musculoskeletal diagnosis, stratification and prognostication, work that continues globally in the search for effective 3D imaging biomarkers of musculoskeletal disease. This has now resulted in a spinout company called KNEE3D that provides 3D knee CT imaging analysis services. I am also a Director of Translational Diagnostics Ltd, a company that provides clinical and consultancy services in imaging and infection.I believe that effective translation of research requires commitment to clinical practice. This not only provides huge satisfaction from interaction with patients looking for a diagnosis or symptomatic relief and, where applicable, new therapies, but also allows me to continue to work at the interface of the clinic and research environments. This is key for informing future innovation.Alongside this, I continue to enjoy the challenges of how medical imaging and anatomy impact on the wider world, for example in art. Most recently this has involved several collaborations with The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, being Imaging Editor for Gray’s Anatomy and a Medical Associate Member of the Medical Artists Association, UK.Through my RCR Roentgen Professorship award in 2020, I also continue to mentor careers in Radiology research from across our workforce in the UK to help secure the future of Academic Radiology; check out the CRASH! podcastand get in touch.
