About Tom Rickey

I have absolutely loved my jobs in communications. Most of my career has involved writing about basic research in science, technology, and medicine, all with an eye toward informing the public’s understanding of research while boosting the reputation of a large research organization that I represent. It is a privilege when people open up about their life’s work, trusting that I will tell their stories accurately, provocatively and with perspective. Telling these stories in precise ways that advance the broadest missions of one’s organization, while staying grounded in truth and in firm journalistic principles – and finding ways to make clear how much fun the work is to accomplish – is challenging and fun.

   My title changes but my role stays the same: Get the word out about cool research at PNNL. One day brings the mystery of the gut-brain link facilitated by microbes; the next brings insight into detection of nuclear explosions anywhere on the planet; and the next brings discussion of snowmelt in the Himalayas. Whatever I am called here, I love my job.
