About Tommy Yip
Making connections, that is, online connections is what I’ve been doing for throughout my career. In the last 10 years, it’s all about protecting those connections. From the words of my current employer, if it’s connected, it must be protected!I’ve been in the IT industry working for five major technology/telecommunication companies which includes IBM, AT & T, OBS, BT, and now Cisco Systems. I started my career as a “router jock” building IP networks across the WAN connecting people from various businesses (i.e, Manufacturing, Banking, Healthcare, Retail, Nonprofits, etc.) from all over the world. From there, I got my CCIE certification in the Service Provider track and held on it for 10 years. Later on, I was building LAN and WLAN connections. Finally, for the last 10 years, I was focused on security technologies such as Cisco Identity Service Engine (ISE) and Cisco Stealthwatch and a little bit of Cisco ASA firewalls. I got my CCNP Security certification with an ISE concentration and just started on my CCIE Security certification.I am a big believer in teamwork and collaboration. I will always make time to help a colleague. I enjoy mentoring and always look for opportunities to take on mentees to share my knowledge and experience.I’ve been working at my dream company, Cisco, for the past 7 years deploying and optimizing my customers’ security posture to protect their most valuable assets. Even though the security technologies I work with are fascinating, at the end of the day, my work comes down to the people (i.e, my teammates, customers, and community) connections I developed throughout my career. While not connecting and protecting my customers, I spent over a decade in various leadership roles at a volunteer nonprofit organization. Currently, I lead a local chapter of my Employee Resource Organization (ERO) at Cisco while studying Cloud technologies.

My work at Cisco allowed me to wear many hats! I helped my customers secure their networks by leading the implementation of Cisco security solutions like Identity Services Engine (ISE) and Secure Network Analytics (SNA - formerly Stealthwatch Enterprise). Aside from technical tasks - I also enjoyed sharing my knowledge with the team. I documented lessons learned to deliver services, which I share with my teammates.I enjoy mentoring both early-career consultants and university interns. Guiding them through projects and equipping them with the knowledge they needed to excel in the field of Cisco security was a fulfilling experience.Collaboration is important to me I worked closely with project managers, account teams, and service delivery leaders to ensure smooth sailing on every project. My technical expertise and experience with previous projects helped define clear steps and timelines, keeping everything on track for successful completion.Beyond the technical side, I believe in fostering connections. That\'s why I co-led the local chapter of CAAN (Connected Asian Affinity Network) ERG organization. It was a great way to connect with other Cisco employees whom I would not have meet otherwise.Check out the Projects section further down my profile to see the projects I was involved and currently working.
