ABOUT TOM SADLER

I am a Stage Two Counselling Psychology doctoral student at Glasgow Caledonian University practicing Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and person-centred experiential therapies, employed by MAPP Psychology.During my undergraduate studies, I co-founded the Nightline service at my university, a peer-to-peer support service for students during night time. As Coordinator for almost two years, I developed the service from the ground up, eventually recruiting over 50 Nightline volunteers. The service was frequently contacted by students seeking support and someone to talk to by phone, instant messaging, or email. This experience had an immense impact on my life, as it established a strong passion towards roles that involve empathy, communication and listening skills, as well as a deep-rooted interest in the wellbeing of others. The exposure to complex presentations such as self-harm and suicide built my resilience, my experience in assessing and managing risk, and truly reinforced the significance of supporting others. As Strategic Partner for Wellbeing in the Scottish Courts and Tribunals Service, I was responsible for developing and implementing wellbeing and mental health initiatives to enhance the overall wellbeing of employees, as well as supporting colleagues. Some key achievements include- I developed and introduced a Mental Health First Aiders programme to the organisation. As a certified SMHFA Trainer, I trained 52 volunteers in MHFA and established a network of support and continuous development for MHFAs- I designed and developed an accessible and engaging Wellbeing Hub, increasing the visibility of available supports and providing crucial information on where to signpost individuals in distress- I created and delivered bespoke workshops on stress, strengthening resilience, reframing and the external supports available- I presented at staff engagement days across Scotland, promoting the SCTS Wellbeing initiative, increasing visibility of our Wellbeing Team and providing psychoeducation.
