About Tom Beres

After over 20 years as a research scientist, I am now using my scientific knowledge to serve as a Scientific Review Officer. My areas of scientific interest and experience include the interplay between signal transduction pathways, gene transcription, and post-translational modification of proteins during development. Previous areas of study include: Organogenesis of skeletal muscle, pancreas, and salivary glands; the role(s) of mucin-type O-linked glycans in physiology and embryonic development. My broad area of expertise includes biomedical research, as well as substantial administrative experience related to organizing projects and supervising laboratory personnel.Model systems: Rat, mouse, chicken embryo, sea urchin, primary and immortalized cell culture (in vitro and in vivo).Molecular Biology and Biochemistry: PCR, Electrophoretic Mobility Shift Assays (EMSA), northern, western, and Southern blotting, screening of cDNA libraries, extensive experience working with RNA, as well as simple and complex cloning and mutagenesis strategies, enzyme assays.Developmental Biology: Immunostaining and lectin staining of embryos in whole mount and sections; colormetric and multi-color fluorescent in situ hybridization of embryos in whole mount and in section; embryo collection, dissection, manipulation, and sectioning; microinjection, antisense morpholino knockdown of gene products, and retrovirus-mediated gene transduction and expression.Additional skills: DIC, fluorescence, and confocal microscopy; production and titering of replication competent and replication incompetent retroviruses (BSL-1 and BSL-2); safe use of radioactivity.Administration: Excellent oral and written communication skills; summary statements for study sections; experience acquiring research funding; supervision of junior laboratory personnel; serving on planning committees and serving as a liaison between investigators, lab personnel, numerous departments and outside vendors.

   Oversee Scientific Review Officers and Support Staff in the review of grant applications in the areas of clinical informatics, health services access and usage, healthcare and health disparities, and implementation science. Implement new policies and best practices in the review branch, as well as train employees and evaluate their performance while guiding the review process. The Health Services and System Review Branch was created from part of the Healthcare Delivery and Methodologies Integrated Review Group in early 2022.
