About Tomas Baltzer
I am a Junior Mechanical Engineering student at the University of Alabama, also part of the STEM/MBA Program. On campus, I\'ve participated in multiple business pitch competitions, including the Big Ideas Competition, and won first place and a prize in the University\'s IP Commercialization Academy. Outside of campus, I worked as a Plasma Energy and Space Research Intern with the Future Technologies and Enabling Plasma Processes (FTPP) initiative, a $20 million National Science Foundation Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (NSF EPSCoR) program. As the only student selected from the University of Alabama and one of eight chosen US delegates, I conducted research in Huntsville, Alabama, and Neustrelitz, Germany, collaborating with the German National Aerospace Center, South African National Space Agency, and the University of Alabama in Huntsville. During my research, I developed a Python machine learning model to analyze solar images, predicting solar emission data for ionosphere modeling and radiation forecasting. Additionally, I utilized MATLAB to research magnetic flux rope structures, using 2D and quasi-3D models to predict upcoming geomagnetic storms and radiation levels. I interned as a Body Shop Process Engineering Intern at Mercedes-Benz International, Inc. in Vance, Alabama. I designed and implemented a more efficient sealer delivery process, reducing sealer inventory in the Body Shop by over $220K and minimizing sealer waste, which is projected to save $840K annually. Additionally, I gained proficiency in manufacturing software tools, including IPortal, Qlik Sense, Engineering Client, and Ignition, as well as gained hands-on experience with shop machinery, specifically MIG welding. Outside of my studies, I am a passionate traveler who has explored 33 countries, both solo and in groups. I thrive on unique and diverse experiences, which have strengthened my adaptability and problem-solving skills. My love for travel has inspired my long-term goal of living and working overseas, embracing new cultures and opportunities.
