ABOUT TOM SUTHERLAND

As a Patent Lawyer at Norton Rose Fulbright, my work exposes me to a wide range of industries. In addition to my law degree, I have a PhD in nuclear chemistry which makes me particularly well suited to discussing complex scientific concepts with the inventors who develop them. I have assisted in drafting patents and contracts, responding to office actions, negotiating settlements, researching arguments, and bringing start-ups into compliance with corporate law requirements. During my studies, I actively participated in university leadership, serving on both the University of Toronto’s Governing Council and Western University’s Board of Governors. I am comfortable working with a disparate group of stakeholders to bring about positive change. Through these experiences I have learned the value of building consensus in challenging political climates. My passion is helping others realize their potential by developing their ideas and protecting their rights. I believe the best way to serve a client is to learn about who they are and the sector they come from. I am able to guide my clients towards better legal outcomes by understanding their underlying business pressures and motivations.
