ABOUT TOM STRAIN
Principal Data Scientist at SRT Marine Systems, previously completed a PhD in Intelligent Transportation Systems at the University of Bristol and Data Scientist at Techmodal and QinetiQ. I am particularly motivated by applications of machine vision, statistics, machine Learning and artificial intelligence.During my career and education I have shown myself to be self-motivated, organised, and capable of working under pressure and keeping to deadlines. I have a practical and analytical approach to science demonstrated by peer reviewed publications, and achievements along my career. My academic publications can found here:Computer Vision for Rapid Updating of the Highway Asset Inventory, published in the Transport Research Record 2020, https://doi.org/10.1177/03••••••••48Augmented Visual SLAM for the Localisation of a Transportation Asset Management Survey Vehicle, published in the proceedings of the 23rd International Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSC), 2020, of Vehicle Counts from the Structural Response of a Bridge, published in the proceedings of the International Conference on Smart Infrastructure and Construction (ICSIC), 2019, https://doi.org/10.1680/icsic.64••••51I have Industrial and academic experience in creating and deploying predictive algorithms/systems throughout the engineering life cycle in the following areas:Computer vision (please refer to paper in Transport Research Record for demonstration)- Designing and training deep neural networks for object detection and classification, and proficiency with keras and tensorflow- Camera calibration and 3-dimensional modelling of vision systems- Simultaneous localisation and mapping (SLAM) systems (see 2020 intelligent transportation systems conference (ITSC) paper).Natural language processing- Designing and making commercial software for the automatic analysis of text documents- Tokenisation and topic modelling methods- Experience with NLTK and spaCy.Software and data engineering- I have experience producing code in Python and Matlab to commercial standards and version control using Git/Gitlab- Published computer vision, time series, and simulation-based systems- Docker and containerisation- Building and querying Oracle and SQL Databases- I also have extensive experience (and prefer) working with Bash and Linux operating systems- Enjoy a few personal software projects too (see https://github.com/tomstrain92/twitterSNA)
