ABOUT TOM PRATT

I have loved aeroplanes and engineering since a very young age so it now brings me immense happiness that I am a civil aircraft design engineer with a specialism in the conceptual design and analysis of sustainably-powered passenger aircraft. I have a strong background as an aerodynamicist and aerodynamic design engineer, with expertise in flight simulation and aerodynamic design optimisation. I have also got direct experience with design, sizing, requirements definition, loads analysis, stability and control analysis, flight dynamics, power plant sizing and installation, thermal analysis, hydrogen fuel system design, hydrogen fuel cell balance of plant integration, electric motor and battery integration, propulsion aerodyamic design and integration. I was a Private pilot before I had my driving license, flying Ikarus C42 Microlights. Unfortunately my license has since expired due to the cost of flying, but I am determined to regain it in the future. I am an experienced aeromodelling enthusiast - I have built flying model aeroplanes since I was about 5 and still build a few a year. For sport I am a hiker, mountain biker and kakayer. I have cycled across the width of the Scottish Highlands with my partner and have kayaked the white water canyons of the river soca in the Slovenian alps. I Successfully submitted and defended my PhD thesis on aircraft aerodynamic adjoint optimisation at the University of Sheffield as a basis for a PhD. I am a former project leader and previously team leader responsible for wing construction with Project Phoenix; a student-led project aiming to scratch-build an airworthy Pietenpol Air Camper (1928).
