ABOUT TOM MULDER
I’m a biologist with expertise in remote sensing and advanced data analysis, specialising in GIS-based approaches to wildlife conservation and landscape-scale ecology.I recently completed a DPhil in Biology at the University of Oxford, in collaboration with Save the Elephants, where I applied cutting-edge technology to monitor wildlife in complex environments. My work focused on mitigating human-elephant conflict through the deployment and management of two large-scale multimodal sensor arrays (350 and 1500 units) in rural Kenya —the largest efforts of its kind in the field of Biology.Through this research, I developed a strong technical foundation in R and Python, working with millions of data points to build advanced statistical and spatial models. I also led diverse, international teams in field operations under challenging conditions.Currently, I’m working with EarthAcre in the private sector, building an in-house tool for automated bird detection in Kenya. The aim is to quantify biodiversity uplift and support the conservation value of community-managed wildlands.My work is grounded in a commitment to ethical, inclusive methods. I advocate for equitable research partnerships and meaningful local engagement, which I’ve written about in two communications in the academic journal, Nature.Beyond science, you’ll often find me out on the water — sailing or windsurfing — enjoying nature.
