ABOUT TOM MARGESSON

I am a tax partner who specialises in advising private capital managers and their investment funds. I co-lead Travers Smith\'s award winning asset management tax team - one of the City\'s leading investment fund tax practices.My clients include the full spectrum of alternative asset managers from the world\'s largest global multi-strategy houses to European based start-up teams. I advise on:1. Alternative investment fund structuring and formation, with particular expertise in private equity, venture capital and credit strategies, as well as semi-liquid retailisation products.2. The day-to-day \'house\' tax issues affecting asset managers, including the incentivisation of private capital professionals (from carried interest and co-investment planning to RSU/stock option arrangements), group restructurings, global mobility, operational tax considerations and early stage tax disputes.3. The full suite of alternative liquidity solutions for investment funds, from LP and GP led secondaries to fund-level NAV facilities. Asset manager M&A and strategic GP stake sales.5. The tax issues affecting institutional investors (including pension funds, sovereign wealth and family offices) on their investment into alternative investment funds.I spent six months on secondment in the international tax team at Apollo Global Management. I am a member of the Alternative Investment Manager Association. I regularly speak and write about tax, including contributing to UK and European tax authority consultations.
