About Tom Lucas

Professor Lucas has been in the Operations Research Department at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) since 1998. Previously, he worked as a statistician and project leader for six years at the RAND Corporation and as a systems engineer for 11 years at Hughes Aircraft Company. He has also spent six semesters as a visiting professor at the National University of Singapore (NUS), two at the University of Southern California, and one at the Universität der Bundeswehr München. Dr. Lucas has won multiple teaching awards at both NPS and NUS. In addition, he has advised over 130 students, from which over a score of major thesis research awards have been won. His primary research interests include military modeling and analysis, high-dimensional design of computational experiments, and robust Bayesian statistics. Dr. Lucas has published over 40 journal articles, book chapters, refereed conference proceedings, refereed RAND publications, and technical reports. His awards include the 2019 Menneken Award for Excellence in Scientific Research Significant and Sustained Contributions at NPS; the 2015 INFORMS Prize for the Teaching of the OR/MS Practice; the 2013 INFORMS Koopman Prize; the Pioneer Teachers Award, National University of Singapore, 2013; the 2009 Hamming Award for Excellence in Teaching at NPS; and the 2003 and 2021 Military Operations Research Society’s Walker Award.
