ABOUT TOM FARRELL
In June of 2021, I graduated from Cal Poly with a bachelor\'s degree in environmental engineering.After graduation I accepted a temporary position as a Project Engineer at Roederer Estate. During this time, I helped the winery address energy resiliency issues by developing a custom solar and iron-flow battery system. I also worked on permitting the winery as a public water system and preparing the winery to meet new wastewater discharge requirements.At Cal Poly I was a part of multiple groups working on problems in the Environmental field. One of the important experiences that I had was participating in the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Pacific Southwest Conference. In this competition teams were given contaminated water and tasked with developing a filter that meets criteria for low cost, easy construction, and effective treatment. Two years our team came in the top 3 out of the 15 teams competing. I have been able to make important contributions to the team by recognizing the benefit of ion-exchange resins such as zeolite for ion removal as well as being on the build team.During the summer of 2019, I worked at Clean Earth Inc. as a part of the PFAS team with Andrew Frederick and Kristen Wainwright. I was brought on the team to help with the development of Thermal Desorption for the treatment of solid PFAS waste and helped with a White Paper Clean Earth put out about the effectiveness of this treatment method. However due to the slow pace of the rollout of EPA regulations our team moved into the realm of water treatment because there is a much greater demand than soil treatment. Our team took a deep dive into the everything there is to know about PFAS and contacted every researcher we could find that was working on treatment methods. We were able to organize R&D tests for a number of the treatment methods (such as sonolysis, plasma, and ozofractionation) at a Clean Earth water treatment facility. Along with PFAS we also took a look at a number of other issues such as a treatment technology of emerging contaminants (such as 1,4 dioxane) that may become regulated in the near future, waste heat recovery, Carbon Capture, and a financial analysis of purchasing a fleet of trucks for Clean Earth\'s soil operations.All the work, research and volunteering that I\'ve done is driven by my passion for making the world a cleaner, better place for humans to live, which stems from my love of the outdoors. I am an avid trail runner, backpacker, and explorer, which has given me a deep respect for our planet as well as a sense of duty to protect it.
