About M. Todd Hales
As a partner at Maschoff Brennan, Todd coordinates representation among partners of the firm in areas of intellectual property and complex business transactions and litigation services. With nearly 20 years of experience at large, global law firms, Todd brings a deep understanding of complex intellectual property strategies, having guided multidisciplinary teams across jurisdictions and technologies as the Global Medical Device Group Chair and Intellectual Property Practice Group Leader for Orange County at an AmLaw 10 firm.In his individual practice, Todd works closely with a variety of clients to develop and manage their IP portfolios by helping them identify and protect key technologies and innovations through careful selection of domestic and foreign protection and enforcement strategies. He also conducts due diligence investigations in connection with funding, acquisitions, and mergers, prepares legal opinions on patent validity, infringement, and noninfringement, and prepares portfolio and landscape evaluations and prelitigation analyses. Todd also advises clients on employment agreements and invention ownership, nondisclosure agreements, assignment of IP rights, and joint development agreements.Todd is admitted to the California State Bar and is a registered patent attorney with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. He has lectured on several occasions regarding intellectual property portfolio strategy and management. He is past Chairman, Vice-Chair, and Program Director of the Intellectual Property Section of the Orange County Bar Association and is a past board member of the Orange County chapter of the J. Reuben Clark Law Society.His technical experience includes representation of individuals and companies in, for example, computer hardware systems, software systems and architecture, networking technologies, environmental technologies, aerospace, sports equipment, medical devices, construction systems and tools, mechanical and electro-mechanical devices, and optics. His medical device experience includes ophthalmology, cardiology, urology, gastroenterology, neurology, pulmonology, radiology, and otolaryngology.
