About Tod Lippy
Founder, editor and designer of annual arts publication ESOPUS and founder and president of the Esopus Foundation Ltd, a New York–based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Editor and cofounder of \"Scenario: The Magazine of Screenwriting Art\" (1994–97), founder, coeditor and designer of publicsfear magazine (1992–94), and a senior editor at Print magazine from 1990 to 1997. Author of \"Projections 11: New York Film-Makers on Film-Making\" (Faber & Faber, and writer/director of the short film \"Cookies,\" which was featured in more than 20 film festivals in the U.S. and abroad. Lippy has lectured on ESOPUS at many educational and cultural institutions, including the American Library Association, MTV Networks, and Nasher Sculpture Center. From 2009 to 2012, Lippy was the curator and executive director of Esopus Space, an alternative exhibition and performance venue in New York City, where he organized 18 exhibitions and staged 30 events. Lippy also curated the exhibitions “Mark Hogancamp” (2006) and “Don Bachardy: One-Day Stands” (2008; co-curated with Matthew Higgs) at White Columns in New York City, and \"Golden Years: Photographs by Ed Rosenbaum\"(2016) and \"Mark Hogancamp: Women of Marwencol\"(2014; co-curated with Janet Hicks) at Pioneer Works in Brooklyn, NY.Lippy\'s work as a freelance book designer includes artists\' exhibitions catalogs, Jason Bitner\'s \"Found Polaroids\"(Quack!Media, 2007), and the cover (w/ Rodrigo Garcia) of \"The Free World\" by Louis Menand (FSG, 2021). In 2018, Lippy partnered with Soho House to create the event series “In Process,” for which he interviewed creative people from a wide range of disciplines about their creative process. In August 2018, he was awarded a MacDowell Colony Fellowship, during which he completed a series of drawings related to ESOPUS published in the fall of 2018. His series of photographs of the off-limits areas of commercial art galleries are the subject of the book \"Private\"(Mirrorical Books, 2024) as well as one-person exhibitions at The Future Perfect, Los Angeles (2/29–4/15/24) and The Meeting, New York (4/10–5/20/24). His portraits of 2024 Trump voters,\"My Fellow Americans,\" has been exhibited in Los Angeles and New York, and was called by The New York Times \"maybe the perfect response to our cultural moment.\"Lippy has released four full-length albums and one EP since 2019. His most recent effort is the 2024 album The Present, recorded, produced, and mixed by Bryce Goggin.

It was formed to provide an unmediated forum through which artists, writers, musicians, and other creative people can make a direct connection with the general public. Its main activity from 2003 to 2018 was the publication of ESOPUS, an annual journal featuring contributions from a cross-section of creative disciplines presented in a striking visual format with minimal editorial framing and no advertising. ESOPUS was named by Library Journal as \"One of the 10 Best New Magazines of 2003\" and has since garnered a number of awards (including Specific Object\'s \"2007 Publication of the Year\") and critical accolades from The New York Times, NPR, The New Yorker, and other magazines, blogs, and broadcasting outlets. The Esopus Foundation has received significant support from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), then New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA), the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, and more than 30 other private and public foundations.
