About Toby Coleman

I am a land use and zoning lawyer based in Raleigh, North Carolina. As the head of the land use group at Smith Anderson, I help my clients navigate the politics and process of obtaining land use approvals and building permits. I dedicate most of my time to representing clients in front of boards, councils and commissions in the various cities and counties of North Carolina\'s Triangle region, including Raleigh and Durham. I also help my firm\'s clients with land use needs across North Carolina, and have handled zoning permit matters in front of county and municipal boards in all parts of North Carolina.(As we like to say here, I\'ve done zoning work from the Mountains to the Coast!)I work with my team to get our clients the information they need to be successful. To do this, we do more than just track the law. We keep an eye on local politics, maintain relationships with local planning officials, and work cooperatively across the development community. I have been honored to serve as the 2021 Chair of the Triangle Community Coalition, an advocacy group that focuses on improving land use policy across the Triangle region.Representative experience can be viewed in my biography on my firm\'s website.
