About Toby Elery
I\'m an engineer at heart! I love problem solving, creating, and understanding how things work. I also love people and the opportunity to help people. As I was finishing my undergrad degree in Mechanical Engineering, I was still debating what my next step was in my career. That was when I had the opportunity to visit a prostheses clinic, which opened my eyes to the field of medical devices. I loved the idea that I could use my engineering background to directly impact and improve someone\'s quality of life. This is why I chose obtain my PhD in Mechanical Engineering, and conduct research in robotic prostheses and orthoses. The combination of my experience, research, and education has provided invaluable insight and knowledge across several engineering disciplines, such as mechanical, electrical, and controls. I implemented this knowledge as I led the design, from concept to completion, of a novel robotic prosthetic leg. I\'ve also contributed to other robotics projects like exoskeletons and mobility platforms. These projects gave me the opportunity to work with clinicians, machinists, and robotics experts. Throughout my roles, I\'ve use model-based engineering practices and make informed design decisions toward the prototyping, functionality, machinability, development, and clinical acceptance of several devices. I\'ve had the privilege to mentor and lead several undergraduate projects (CAD, coding, and PCB design), and manage two undergraduate senior capstone projects. I have disseminated my research to the field through several publications and presentations. One of my favorite hobbies is 3D printing. From practical prints to Christmas gifts, I love printing on my MP Mini Select V2. I also enjoy tinkering, taking thing apart to see how they operate, and working on my truck.CAD Programs: Solidworks, PTC Creo ParametricProgramming Languages: LabVIEW, MATLAB, LaTeX, C++Software: ANSYS Mechanical, Elmo Application Studio, Windows, Microsoft Office
