ABOUT TOBIN NG

I’m a fact checker, journalist and editor. I’ve fact-checked for magazines including The Walrus, Toronto Life and Canada\'s History. I write LGBTQ2S+ arts and culture stories for outlets such as Maclean’s, Broadview and This. In my day jobs, I’m a co-ordinator at the Canadian media development organization Journalists for Human Rights (JHR) and a contributing editor at the queer magazine Xtra. I worked as a fact checker and research assistant on the Truth in Journalism Project, an initiative that produced a rigorous and inclusive editorial fact checking handbook. I then spent a year fact-checking features through The Walrus‘s editorial fellowship. As an associate editor at Maisonneuve from 2023-25, I oversaw fact checking for each issue, edited longform pieces and shepherded stories through the entire editorial and production process, from pitch to print proof. I specialize in storytelling that spotlights care, creativity and innovation in LGBTQ2S+ and racialized communities. Whether I’m reviewing a documentary about the legacy of queer and trans activism in Canada or unpacking the latest anti-trans buzzword, my reporting provides deeper social and historical context and dispels misinformation about marginalized people. At JHR, I manage fellowships for emerging BIPOC reporters and build programs to train journalists to produce stronger human rights coverage. My advocacy work began at Carleton University, where I co-founded a student-led body that addressed systemic racism in the j-school and the wider industry. In 2022, I was awarded a Canadian Journalism Foundation bursary for my engagement with BIPOC communities and dedication to journalistic standards. I’m always asking questions about how fact checkers and journalists can bring greater care to their work.
