I work in a low barrier shelter in Santa Monica. The shelter offers interim housing and case management to aid clients in moving towards sustainable long term housing. My duties include keeping the shelter safe and secure, serving meals and helping clients sign up for and access services. Most importantly, I am personable with the clients, building the report and trust that is crucial for successful deescalation. I have additionally been teaching a yoga class to the clients once a week. It has been very encouraging to offer residents the means to get their bodies moving, establish healthy habits and cultivate mindfulness along the way.
