ABOUT TIMOTHY R. SPENCER
Timothy R. Spencer is an experienced Australian critical care nurse (adult and paediatric) and Vascular Access Specialist, a well established and respected researcher, scientist, medical writer and key leader in the vascular access arena. Awarded the Suzanne LaVere Herbst Award for Excellence in Vascular Access from AVA in 2019, he continues to drive best clinical practices, from local to global audiences, sharing skills and knowledge for practitioners. He is an avid author and is a member of the WoCoVA Scientific Committee as well as an Associate Editor for JVATim provides clinical practitioners, healthcare facilities and medical device companies with current evidence-based practices, management & educational strategies to improve and streamline their facility practices, who desire a strategic partner with high-level skills and expertise in vascular access and ultrasound procedures to facilitate a change healthcare opportunities for better patient and device outcomes.Achieving this experience can be challenging when clinicians are undertaking new and diverse roles, but it is the leaders in vascular access who will continue to challenge the boundaries of clinical practice in modern healthcare and stimulate those who aim to follow in their footsteps.My clinical and personal experience is very important to me, especially in reducing insertion-related complications and improving the overall patient encounter. As an experienced clinician of 35+ years, being an expert in ultrasound-guided vascular access has given me the ongoing desire to push the boundaries within my scope of practice and also assist and develop other healthcare professionals in their pursuit of vascular access excellence.Moving away from a traditional blind landmark technique to utilizing state-of-the-art ultrasound practices, both in the pre-assessment phase for vessel health and preservation strategies, but for direct vessel visualization and intra-procedural monitoring, allows clinicians to make a succinct clinical decisions on which device and insertion site is the most appropriate for the patient, for the required therapy and for the duration of treatment.Tim is also a Flight Lieutenant in the RAAF Specialist Reserve (RAAF-SR) posted with 3AME Squardon aeromedical evacuation specialist unit. I have provided clinical education to the ADF Special Forces and Military Medicine programs to enhance healthcare provided in austere environments and also provided civilian retrieval services to various health insurance companies during my career.
