ABOUT TIMOTHY GRETEN
Tim Greten, a career Federal Senior Executive (SES), currently serves as the Director, Office of Central Processing for the National Weather Service (NWS) in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Mr. Greten leads the team responsible for maintaining and improving AWIPS, the NWS nationwide communication, forecasting and data transmission system linking 170+ Weather Forecast Offices, National Centers, River Forecast Centers, the US Navy, and NASA. He leads the “AWIPS in the Cloud” Program, building NWS next-gen AWIPS. Mr. Greten also is responsible for sustaining the current NWS Weather and Climate Operational Supercomputer (WCOSS2), and securing the next-gen WCOSS3. Mr. Greten served as the Acting NWS Chief Financial Officer in 2022-23. He led FY22 closeout activities for the $1.5B NWS appropriation. He also oversaw NWS FY23 budget enactment, FY24 Congressional passback negotiations, and the first phases of the FY25 Presidential Budget submission development in cooperation with NOAA & Department of Commerce CFOs, & the Office of Budget and Management (OMB). Mr. Greten previously served as the NWS Director, Office of Facilities. In this role, he was responsible for nationwide NWS facilities strategic planning, budgeting, policy development, and comprehensive life-cycle activities. Mr. Greten led NWS safety and environmental compliance programs. Before joining NOAA, Mr. Greten was the Senior Policy Advisor to the Federal Mine Safety and Health Review Commission. FMSHRC annually resolves thousands of trial and appellate level disputes arising under the Federal Mine Safety Act of 1977 between miners, industry, and MSHA. Mr. Greten previously served as the Deputy Director of the FEMA’s Technological Hazards Division, ensuring community safety around commercial nuclear power plants and U.S. Army chemical weapons destruction facilities. Mr. Greten began his career as a deck watch officer aboard Coast Guard Cutter DURABLE, conducting law enforcement and search and rescue operations in the Caribbean. He has managed multi-million dollar Coast Guard homeland security boat acquisition programs, and supported several Department of Defense agencies as a contractor. Mr. Greten received a B.S. in Management from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, an MPA from The American University, and a JD from Antonin Scalia Law School at George Mason University. In his free time Mr. Greten enjoys competing in triathlons, rooting for the Buffalo Bills, and mixing great golf shots in with his bad ones.
