Alameda County, CA, US

SHCLA is the first community land trust of its kind, with a mission to increase access to mental health services by creating permanent supportive housing for individuals in Alameda County. With generous support from Alameda County Health Care Services utilizing Mental Health Services Act Innovations Funding, SHCLA uses housing as a healthcare intervention. The SHCLA model includes two project types: 1.) a family co-investment model where families pool capital to acquire and rehab independent living homes, and 2.) a licensed board and care model that works with operators to prevent closure/expand capacity. Both models build long-term affordability for owners and provide a perpetual community benefit by ensuring that homes retain their initial intended use as independent living homes or licensed board and care facilities. Both models center on housing production for serious mental health illness (SMI) populations. The land trust model ensures the housing created remains available to this population in perpetuity and is governed by community members who participate in decision-making.
