ABOUT THYE NGO

Thye Peng Ngo is a nurse educator and researcher with over 15 years of experience as a registered nurse, nurse practitioner, and faculty member. His work focuses on addressing structural inequities in health and healthcare for marginalized populations, particularly LGBTQ+ individuals, unhoused communities, and Veterans. His research examines the intersections of substance use, mental health, and social determinants of health, with an emphasis on syndemic conditions and multiple substance use.Dr. Ngo earned his PhD in Nursing from Indiana University, where he focused on simulation-based education and peer learning. He recently completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), through the National Clinician Scholars Program, where he received advanced training in clinical and quantitative research. During his fellowship, he led multiple studies examining how structural vulnerabilities, such as housing instability, food insecurity, and HIV status, shape substance use patterns and mental health outcomes.His recent projects include studies on hazardous alcohol use among sexual minority men, the impact of unmet subsistence needs on mental health among unhoused women, and patterns of substance co-use and mortality among Veterans on long-term opioid therapy. In addition to leading these quantitative studies, Dr. Ngo collaborates with academic and community partners on projects that incorporate qualitative and mixed-methods approaches to examine housing transitions, healthcare access, and the implementation of behavioral health services among structurally marginalized populations. As a certified nurse educator (CNE) and certified healthcare simulation educator (CHSE), Dr. Ngo remains active in nursing education and simulation-based training. He facilitates interprofessional simulation sessions for clinical trainees and conducts research on collaborative decision-making, clinical reasoning, and psychologically safe learning environments.
