About Thomas Rickner
I fell in love with letterforms while studying printing management at the Rochester Institute of Technology in the 1980\'s. That led me to focus on the history and development of type design and type technology. My early corporate work involved hand editing bitmaps for a proprietary desktop publishing system, and later \"hinting\" outline fonts for laser printers, before joining the original TrueType development team at Apple Computer. A brief stint as a freelance designer enabled me to work with and learn from David Berlow of the Font Bureau. I was with Monotype for nearly a decade before leaving to form Ascender along with several other good partners from our previous company. 2009 marks 5 years of Ascender\'s strong presence in the font industry, where we create compelling type and software solutions for a wide array of customers.Specialties: Typeface design, TrueType hinting, OpenType layout development, FontLab Python macro development, creative problem solving.
