About Thomas Burns
My mission is one of ambassadorship: to connect users with scientific ideas and discovery in ways that are design-forward and experience first. At the Manning College of Information and Computer Sciences I oversee the Physical Computing Makerspace, a hands-on learning hub committed to fueling student development, faculty research, and hardware innovation in the college. Before discovering the beautiful world of electronics I worked for nearly 20 years in motion picture production, with particular focus on the documentary genre. I am a former Fulbright Scholar with a robust international network and a deep commitment to cross-discipline collaboration. I am, at my core, a tech optimist: I believe that there has never been a better time to be human than right now.My ongoing mission is to inspire transformation in the end
Experience
Assistant Director of Facilities and Infrastructure
Manning College Of Information And Computer Sciences, Umass Amherst
Jul 2024 — Present · Amherst, MA, US
I develop and execute strategy aimed at optimizing college infrastructure to support student development, faculty research, and our mission of Computing for the Common Good. A large part of my work involves overseeing the growth of the college\'s Physical Computing Makerspace: from designing its new home in the Computer Science Laboratories building to curating a new slate of workshops and community events aimed at fueling the college\'s unique culture of exploration and innovation. At the end of the day, the goal of all of my work managing the college\'s infrastructure is to lift people up: to empower our faculty to do their best research, to provide our staff the tools they need to succeed at their jobs, and to give our students the freedom to dream big and swing for the fences. This, for me, is computing for the common good.
