ABOUT THOMAS WIECZOREK
After first setting out on a career in journalism that took me from Ionia to Golden, Colorado, I realized that unless I wanted to eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches most of my life, I needed to look at other careers. Following graduation from Police Academy 79-3 at Kalamazoo Valley Community College in 1979 as well as training in firefighting, I began a career as an Ionia City Police Officer. Following a promotion three years later, I moved up the ranks and was tapped to be the fire chief while the city converted from a separate police and fire department to public safety. During the conversion, I was promoted to deputy director and later director of public safety while also being asked to serve as interim city manager. In 1989, I became the city manager of Ionia and served for 16 years until I retired in 2005 to move to Washington, DC where I became the Executive Director for the Commission on Fire Accreditation International. We rebranded to the Center for Public Safety Excellence, Inc, and released a new umbrella organization serving the fire services. In 2008, I moved to the ICMA where they had begun a consulting services program and led a program to educate cities on emergency management in partnership with FEMA and the National League of Cities. We trained communities across 47 states. In 2010, I was asked to help rebrand that team which became the Center for Public Safety Management. In 2014, during a reorganization, CPSM became CPSM, LLC, a stand-alone company.
