ABOUT THOMAS SUTTON

I am a litigation partner at McCarthy Tétrault and the National Practice Group Leader for the firm\'s Litigation and Dispute Resolution Group. My practice focuses on complex commercial disputes and professional liability. In addition, I am one of the firm\'s leading lawyers in the use of technology through all phases of litigation, from commencement through to hearing. I have appeared as counsel at all levels of court, including the Supreme Court of Canada, and various arbitral and administrative tribunals. Several of my cases have received national media attention. My reported cases can be quickly found on CanLII or other similar electronic databases. In recognition of my experience, I teach Trial Advocacy and Medical Negligence as an adjunct professor with the Queen’s University Faculty of Law, Kingston, ON, and have taught Officers’ and Directors’ Liability as a member of faculty with The Directors College, the DeGroote School of Business at McMaster University, Hamilton, ON. I am also a regular speaker and seminar leader at The Advocates’ Society, Osgoode Hall Law School’s CPD programs, the LSO, and the CBA(O). In 2019, I became a representative on the Law Society of PEI\'s Continuing Legal Education Committee. I have also served as a director on several charitable boards and have led special committees relating to corporate governance and the corporate re-organization of these organizations. I received my IB from the Lester B. Pearson College of the Pacific in 1988, my BA in IR/History/Econ from the U. of T. in 1992, my MA in IR/History from the U. of T. in 1993, my JD from the U. of Detroit-Mercy in 1996 and my LLB from the U. of W. in 1996. I was called to the Ontario bar in 1998 and the PEI bar in 2018. In 1995, I spent a semester in London, UK, studying international dispute resolution. I also undertook a mini-pupilage with a set of barristers at Middle Temple.
