In 2004, Dr. Shaffer was awarded a Center for Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) grant ($10 million) from the NIH for the development of a Center for Pediatric Research (CPR) at the Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Delaware. The purpose of this award is to expand translational research grants in the State of Delaware for improving health care in the pediatric population. In the fall, 2009, Dr. Shaffer, Director, the Center for Pediatric Research program received an additional $1.6 million in supplemental ARRA funding to bridge COBRE funding during the review of the COBRE Phase II proposal.In September 17, 2010, the Center for Pediatric Research, under the direction of Dr. Shaffer, secured an additional 5-year NIH COBRE competitive grant renewal of $9.5 million to continue with COBRE Phase II and in August 2015, an additional 5-year NIH COBRE grant renewal of $ 5million was awarded to continue with COBRE Phase
