ABOUT THOMAS GRUHL
My main focus of interest is understanding the regulation and function of proteins involved in signalling and regulation such as membrane proteins e.g. G protein coupled receptors (GPCR) by using structural biological methods like X-ray crystallography, cryo-EM and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) according to their strength and the aim of the project. During my doctoral thesis, I established a protocol to grow highly diffracting crystals of a mammalian GPCR in lipidic cubic phase to follow the activation process from femto to milli seconds when using time-resolved crystallography. Expanding my horizon, I pursued a postdoctoral researcher position at the Institute of Structural and Molecular Biology, a joint institute between UCL and Birkbeck in the field of structural biology using cryogenic electron microscopy with the aim to understand the function of different isoforms in mitochondrial complexes when forming supercomplexes.Currently, acquiring expertise in the development of new high-performance PCR reagents for research and diagnostics at PCR Biosystems in the R&D department.
