About Thomas Foo
Over 30+ years experience in medical imaging and product development. Currently Chief Scientist for Biology and Applied Physics at GE Research in Niskayuna, NY. Responsible for development of new ideas and innovation across a range of diagnostic imaging modalities. Current activity include NIH or CDMRP funded projects to develop advanced neuroimaging systems with high performance gradients. Building upon the NIH-funded successful low-cyrogen, high-performance head-only Compact 3T MRI scanner that is now operation at the Mayo Clinic since 2016, we have recently installed a new head-only 3T MAGNUS (Microstructure Anatomy Gradient for Neuroimaging with Ultra-fast Scanning) gradient research system at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center that is capable of 200 mT/m and 500 T/m/s. This CDMRP-funded project provides new capability to explore mild traumatic brain injury as well as a range of neurological disease processes. We are currently working on an NIH-funded BRAIN Initiative project which is a joint GE-Mayo Clinic-UCSF effort to build a lightweight, low-cryogen head-only Compact 7T scanner with 130 mT/m and 850 T/m/s gradients. All of these MRI scanners are research development systems and do not have FDA 510(k) clearance.Specialties: Extensive experience in clinical medical imaging and in the development of medical imaging products. Ability to lead large global teams developing technology that impact increased diagnostic efficiency. Magnetic resonance imaging, Image-guided therapy, and Cardiovascular imaging
