About Thomas Anil Oommen
I am dedicated to fostering critical hope through the arts and education, leading initiatives for equitable change in local, regional, national, and international contexts. I founded Oregon DesiFest (ODF) in 2023 as a response to the lack of a nuanced understanding of the South Asian diaspora in Oregon. ODF emerged from my work as a K-12 teacher educator/trainer emphasizing identity-safe classrooms and communities. ODF centers the arts and community. I see it as a form of public pedagogy. I am committed to creating spaces for dialogue and solidarity. This commitment extends to my work as a K-12 teacher educator who deeply values emergent multilingualism and as a trainer of trainers for the Our Whole Lives (OWL) Lifespan Comprehensive Sexuality Education curricula. My work is anchored in an unapologetically antiracist, anti-casteist perspective, embodying pluralistic and Freirean ideals. I see art as \"spiritual technology,\" and combined with education can be tools for liberation and healing—a philosophy I strive to embody and refine daily.
