The team manages the mission-critical Routing Platform and Edge Protection for the Zalando Shop. We leverage Akamai for edge security and a custom-built platform — driven by Skipper (an Open Source Proxy) with AWS ELBs as the Kubernetes ingress controller, and custom CRDs and their controller loops — to manage traffic across 250+ Kubernetes clusters.Key Contributions & Leadership- Reliability & CI/CD Integrity: Redesigned the error-handling framework for the Gateway. This eliminated a critical race condition where the CI/CD platform would report \"success\" despite configuration errors, ensuring that only valid, safe configurations reach production- Quality Engineering: Increased delivery confidence for the Gateway feature by improving end-to-end (e2e) test coverage by 8–10%, significantly reducing the risk of regressions in a high-traffic environment- Testing in Production (TiP): Played a key role in developing advanced routing capabilities that enabled Testing in Production, a major strategic milestone for Zalando’s deployment maturity- Strategic Initiative Lead: Currently leading the \"Safer and Dev-Friendly Shadow Traffic\" project. This initiative empowers engineers to safely duplicate production traffic to test new features under real-world conditions without impacting the end-user experience- Consultancy & Security Advocacy: Act as a subject matter expert for application teams, providing guidance on secure routing architecture, including WAF, Bot Protection, rate-limiting, and outsourcing authentication/authorization to the Routing Platform.
