With a PhD in Transport Economics from the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées - Université Paris Est, Dr. Thierno Birahim AW more than 20 years of professional experience in the field of transport and mobility in urban and regional areas. His approach to integrated transport and land-use planning prioritizes inclusive territorial development and environmentally friendly strategies.He has led complex studies and research for both public and private sectors, analyzed and presented strategic recommendations, and supported public authorities in the design and implementation of major ssustainable urban mobility projects, such as the first all-electric BRT system in Africa combined with a restructuring of the public transport network. This experience reflects regular interactions with various stakeholders, including public decision-makers, local authorities, DFIs, and operational teams.Prior to joining the World Bank as a Senior Urban Specialist, Dr. Aw was Technical Advisor No. 1 to the Minister in charge of land transport (20••••16), before taking up the position of Managing Director of the Executive Council for Sustainable Urban Transport (CETUD), the Senegalese Mobility Organizing Authority, until June 2025. Cumulatively, he was elected in 2023, President of the African Association of Urban Mobility Authorities (AUMA), following its founding General Assembly, and Vice-President of the Calypso Networks Association (CNA). This career path has been enriched by professional experience in the private sector as a general and technical studies engineer (2008–2014) with a major Paris-based group, as well as by research work as a grantee at the Laboratoire Ville Mobilité Transport (2004–2008).
