The purpose of the Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Committee (DIAC) is to encourage diversity and inclusion within CIM and the mining industry at large. DIAC is working to meet this goal through objectives that include the encouragement of increased diversity and inclusion within the broader CIM organization, provide guidance to CIM executives and the Council on all things related to diversity and inclusion, and assist CIM in linking the messages around the business case to the industry through its publications, electronic communications and conference and outreach programs.

ABOUT THERESA NYABEZE P. ENG
A value driven talented connector of people, Ms. Nyabeze is a Professional Mining Engineer with 20 years of combined engineering & operations experience in the mining industry. She engages with the mantra: “You take care of the people and the rest will follow safety, innovation and profits”. Theresa has a 360 degree view of the mining ecosystem having worked as a Frontline Supervisor, in technical teams, project execution and from working alongside suppliers/consultants servicing the mine industry. As a Senior Mine Engineer at Vale she works on Mine Design projects for various mines. Recognizing, the importance of promoting diversity, inclusion in mining as a way to promote high performance safe innovative teams, Ms. Nyabeze has sought vehicles that improve insights into the experiences of people working in the industry such as WISE – Women in Science & Engineering. She has co-authored two articles: Gaining Insights on Career Satisfaction for Women in Mining & Gaining insights into mentorship initiatives in the Canadian mining industry. She is also interested in the integration of the immigrant talent pool and other underrepresented groups into the mine industry. Ms. Nyabeze has authored a Children’s book, “Underground! My Mining Adventure” to provide an engagement tool that introduces youth to mining. One of the key messages in the book is the affirmation that there is room for all types of people in mining and the importance of validating mining myths with positive reality. For her contributions to her community she was bestowed a 40 Under Forty Award by Northern Ontario Business. Understanding the importance of engagement of people working in the mining industry, she is Co-Chairing a new conference: Mining Engagement Conference for Advancement (MECA) in Partnership with the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM). In May, 2020 - Ms.Nyabeze was appointed as the co-Chair of CIM’s -Diversity and Inclusion Committee (DIAC)- with a mandate to influence internal CIM policies as well as those for the mining industry at large.
