As a Train Conductor at CN, I was part of a vibrant and safety-focused team responsible for the movement of trains, rail cars, and locomotives both in rail yards and on the road. This role was more than a job; it was a career filled with challenging tasks and rewarding experiences.My primary duties included coordinating the assembly of trains, operating track switches, making emergency repairs, and executing ground work outside the locomotive cab. I ensured compliance with all train orders, signals, railroad rules and regulations related to safety and operations, and effectively communicated with various teams via handheld radio.I underwent an intensive 11-week paid training program, which included both classroom learning and field training. Post-training, I undertook a minimum of 45 trips as an additional crew member to further enhance my knowledge and skills.The role required regular and predictable attendance, flexibility to accommodate a 24/7 schedule, and the ability to perform physically demanding tasks in varying weather conditions. These tasks included pushing, pulling, lifting and carrying up to 90 pounds, operating various devices on rail cars and locomotives, and climbing on and off ladders of moving rail cars.Working at CN, a world-class transportation leader, gave me the opportunity to contribute to the safe transportation of over 300 million tons of goods throughout North America annually. Being part of a team that prioritizes safety, sustainability, operational and supply chain excellence was both fulfilling and exciting. The thrill of motion was indeed part of the everyday adventure at CN.
