ABOUT TERRY FLENNAUGH

Terry K. Flennaugh is Associate Dean of Access and Community Engagement and an Associate Professor of Race, Culture, and Equity in Education in the Department of Teacher Education in the College of Education at Michigan State University. After receiving his PhD from UCLA’s Graduate School of Education and Information Studies, Dr. Flennaugh took a position in MSU’s College of Education where he currently teaches courses on urban schools, social foundations of justice and equity in education, and critical race theory. His research is primarily concerned with urban education and the educational experiences of Black boys. Specifically, his interests revolve around identity formation and the sense-making processes Black boys undergo as they matriculate through primary and secondary schools in urban contexts across the United States. Dr. Flennaugh’s work on issues of identity formation, urban teacher preparation, college access and equity for historically marginalized populations, and single-sex educational spaces has been featured in such journals as Teachers College Press, Race, Ethnicity and Education, and Educational Foundations. Additionally, he is an editorial board member for Urban Education and Equity & Excellence in Education. His extensive experience with college access and educational enrichment programs has allowed him to serve on a number of university and community-based committees tasked with improving and diversifying institutions of higher education.
