ABOUT TERESA LEARY HANDY

I am a transformative, strategic innovative higher education Program Chair and Assistant Faculty who leads the entry point general education course for UAGC. In addition to supporting over 100 associate faculty I am responsible for the administrative and course design elements for the entry point course. I am an active researcher and have been awarded four University Fellowship research grants that are centered on exploring best practices for institutional diversity efforts, peer-to-peer mentoring and open educational resources (OERs). I am also a diversity practitioner, and social worker with experience in the areas of academic instruction, community engagement, and diversity, equity, and inclusion. I am skilled in culturally responsive pedagogy, parental engagement, social justice education, equity, and inclusivity. I have a demonstrated history of working collaboratively with administrators, faculty, students, and parents to achieve ambitious institutional goals and objectives. To further my work in this area I have written two children’s books on ability differences (vision and hearing) to help educators and parents begin early conversations about ability differences. My philosophy is based on a quote from the Children\'s Defense Fund President, Marian Wright Edelman:\"Community service is the rent we pay for living” and in the classroom I see myself as the tour guide of the active learner.
