ABOUT TEIKA NEWTON

A lifelong, insatiable curiosity for understanding people and places, and the interrelationships of all things, and a passion for humanitarianism and justice has directed me to a career in environmental and climate justice advocacy - applied to the place I live and love, the Rainy-Lake of the Woods watershed, in Treaty 3 territory. Although my academic training is in evolutionary biology, and past career explorations have included such wildly disparate fields as horticulture, cancer research, investment banking, film production, baking, and natural resources management research, my ideal home exists where I can draw on all of these interests to help make the world a better place for all people and all creatures. Climate change, as the most broadly cross-cutting and most profoundly severe threat to humanity in the 21st Century, compels actions of many kinds, undertaken by people from all walks of life. With my wide scope of interests and experiences, working with people and communities to address the impacts and actions required to address climate change is a natural extension of my skills and passions. I have always found human interactions compelling. I love hearing people’s stories, especially of how we relate to our natural world. This is an approach that underpins the work I do, drawing people together in intentional spaces where emergent wisdom grows and flows. As a mother, through my work, and as an active member of my community, I continue to explore ever more deeply the profound breadth of the relationships that weave through our lives: relationships with place and among people, relationships that inform my identity and that of the place itself.
